The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has praised the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) for its transparency in providing oil and gas data and called for stronger collaboration between the two agencies.
Statistician-General of the Federation, Prince Semiu Adeyemi Adeniran, made the commendation during a visit to NUPRC headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, June 2, 2026. He was accompanied by senior NBS officials.
Adeniran stressed that oil and gas plays a major role in Nigeria’s economy and cannot be overlooked in national data collection. He noted that NBS serves as the central body for official statistics and works with local governments, states, academia, and other partners to produce reliable data for policy making.
Since NUPRC holds all upstream petroleum data, Adeniran said effective collaboration is essential for NBS to fulfil its mandate, especially for GDP calculations.
“If we don’t get data on our oil and gas sector, we cannot release data on GDP,” he stated.
He commended NUPRC for consistently supplying key data over the years.
The NBS chief named a team to engage regularly with NUPRC on crude production, gas reserves, oil spill incidents, and exploration activities.
He also highlighted the Integrated System of Administrative Statistics and ongoing work on Petroleum National Accounting.
In her response, NUPRC Chief Executive Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan agreed on the critical importance of data. She said the commission releases information regularly as required by the Petroleum Industry Act and publishes it on its website.
She called for automation and integration of systems across government agencies to improve efficiency.
