The Labour Party (LP) in Rivers State has dismissed the purported suspension of governorship aspirant, Prince Chioma Chinwo, describing it as a “laughable” exercise in futility carried out by non-members of the party.
Speaking with newsmen, Rivers State LP Secretary, Mr. Olumati Isaiah, said the suspension should be ignored, stressing that Chinwo remains a bona fide member of the party.
“Those behind the so-called suspension are not even members of Labour Party,” Olumati declared.
He expressed strong support for Chinwo’s court action challenging his exclusion from the governorship primaries.
The party scribe wondered why Chinwo, who met all necessary requirements, was sidelined while a non-member was allegedly favoured by the national leadership.
He assured that Chinwo would feature on the ballot for the governorship election and warned that the Labour Party would not participate in the forthcoming Rivers elections if the aspirant is barred from contesting.
In a related development, Prince Chioma Chinwo has approached the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt, seeking an interlocutory injunction to stop the party’s governorship primaries scheduled for today, May 30, 2026.
Counsel to Chinwo, Mr. Dolapo Attoni, told newsmen that the action became necessary following the unlawful exclusion of his client from the primaries without any reason from the party.
Attoni cited relevant sections of the Electoral Act and urged the Labour Party and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately halt all processes on the Rivers primaries until the court determines the matter.
The development has heightened tension within the Labour Party in the state as the primaries coincide with the court action.
