Super Eagles’ former international, Victor and Sunday Oliseh recently criticized the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL). He said the country’s best domestic players are not in the league because of pay.
“Nigeria’s best domestic players are not in the NPFL, how do I know, it’s very obvious that they’ve moved abroad to find jobs “he said. According to Oliseh poor treatment of players in the NPFL has led to many of the country’s talents leaving.
Oliseh spoke about this when people were calling for home-based players to be included in the Super Eagles’ team for the 2026 Unity Cup in London.
The former Juventus, Borussia Dortmund and Ajax midfielder stressed that better treatment of players is vital to stopping the migration of home-based talents.
“Football is a business ” Oliseh said. “When we were playing we were always paid on time. Though it was a little amount but we got it on time. If you want players to stay in Nigeria make sure the league is good and okay ” he stated.
Meanwhile other former Super Eagles striker Victor is also upset about the state of Nigeria’s football.
Victor, known for his shots said: “If the current super Eagles squad had played all the matches with intensity, we would have qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Football is not about players or social media hype but about winning games. Imagine a country like Dr. Congo beat the “Giant of Africa”, qualified and proved they deserved to be more than Nigeria “.
He continued: “And again, it will also be good to point out that it has been a while since Nigeria hosted a major tournament. The last one we hosted was in 2000, which is over 20 years now.
We all know the situation in Nigeria. The stadiums are not good enough to host a CAF tournament. Even the national team finds it difficult to play matches in Nigeria.
Victor added: “When we go to states, for Super Eagles games we have only one stadium that is good enough to host qualifying matches.
And this is very sad, it’s very obvious that in Nigeria there is no long-term plan. We only plan for now, we don’t take care of our things “.
