The Nigerian government has stopped controlling the price of jet fuel.
This means that the price of jet fuel in Nigeria will now be decided by the market.
The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority made this decision because they think that controlling the price of fuel is not an idea.
They are worried that if they control the price there will not be fuel and people might start selling fuel illegally.
The price of jet fuel in Nigeria has changed a lot in the few months.
In February 2026 it was ₦900 per litre but by April it had gone up to around ₦3,300 per litre.
This is a problem for airlines because they cannot afford to buy fuel.
Airlines are having a time running their flights on time and they are also having trouble with their crew schedules.
The Nigerian Airline Operators say that if they do not get fuel it will not be safe for passengers and crew members.
The president of Nigeria has tried to help the airlines by reducing the amount of money they owe to the aviation authorities. Now the airlines have to pay 30% less.
The government has also come up with a pricing formula for jet fuel.
In Lagos and Abuja the price of jet fuel will be between ₦1,760 and ₦2,037 per litre.Nigeria is one of the aviation markets in Africa.
In 2025 they had 10.5 million passengers.. Even with all these passengers the airlines are still struggling.
The high price of fuel and the problems with exchanging money are making it hard for them to operate.
The Dangote refinery which is trying to help by refining fuel in Nigeria isn’t enough to bring the prices down.
Although people think that if Nigeria includes jet fuel in the naira-for-crude arrangement it will help the airlines because they will not have to pay in dollars.
However, Nigeria needs to find a way to make jet fuel more affordable so that airlines can operate safely and efficiently.
Jet fuel is a problem for Nigeria and it needs to be solved.
