The Governing Council of the University of Port Harcourt has reiterated its commitment to positioning the institution for global relevance through digital transformation, innovation, and strategic partnerships.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa made this known during a four-day Council Retreat held at Lakowe Golf Resort in Lagos.
Speaking on the theme, “Positioning the University of Port Harcourt for Global Visibility through Digital Transformation, Entrepreneurship Development and Strategic Partnerships,” Senator Ohuabunwa stressed the need for deliberate and strategic efforts to enhance the University’s global visibility.
He noted that digital transformation remains central to strengthening academic delivery, improving administrative efficiency, and boosting the institution’s competitiveness in the global knowledge economy.
Senator Ohuabunwa called for increased investment in digital infrastructure, capacity building for staff, and the development of innovative partnerships with industry and international institutions.
He emphasized that a coordinated approach involving all stakeholders is critical to achieving meaningful and sustainable transformation.
Also speaking, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Abraham-Georgewill, underscored the critical role of digital transformation in modern university administration, describing it as a key driver for institutional growth and sustainability.

Professor Georgewill also remarked that the University is already taking practical steps toward digitizing its academic and administrative processes, noting that sustained commitment to innovation will enhance teaching, research output, and global engagement.
The retreat featured contributions from notable academic leaders, including former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Professor Joseph Ajienka; former Vice-Chancellor of Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Professor Barineme Fakae; and Professor Bourdillon Omijeh, alongside the Prodigy Group and Professor Angela Frank-Briggs.
The scholars spoke extensively on the urgent need to embrace digital transformation as a pathway to academic excellence, research innovation, and global competitiveness.
The four-day retreat, organised by the UNIPORT Governing Council, brought together key stakeholders to deliberate on the strategic direction of the University.
It is expected to produce actionable strategies and policy frameworks aimed at repositioning the University of Port Harcourt for sustained growth and increased international recognition.
