Media personality Toke Makinwa hasn’t held back in her latest critique of Nigerian men, claiming that a large number of them have absolutely nothing to offer a relationship outside of their bank accounts.
Dropping her thoughts on the latest episode of the MENtality podcast, hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Makinwa argued that the stereotype of Nigerian women being money-hungry actually starts with the men themselves. Why? Because too many guys think financial provision is their only selling point.
According to her, the transactional nature of romance isn’t new, as it goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden, but modern men have taken it to a different level. “Sometimes, that is all men have to offer,” Makinwa pointed out during the sit-down. “Nigerian men don’t have games aside from money.”
She explained that the moment a typical Nigerian guy hits some cash, his immediate instinct is to start throwing it at the most attractive women he can find. The problem, she says, is that even when a woman genuinely wants to get to know a guy on a deeper level, he immediately tries to flash his wallet instead.
Makinwa ultimately flipped the script on who is to blame for the high demands in the dating pool today, stating bluntly: “Most girls who are materialistic today, men taught them how to make demands.”
