Resident Doctors Raise Alarm Over Allowance Cut Plans

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has warned that recent moves to reverse the Professional Allowance Table could seriously affect the welfare of its members and place additional strain on the country’s healthcare system.

The association raised the concern after its leadership met with the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, describing the engagement as high-level and focused on improving doctors’ welfare nationwide.

In a statement signed by its Publicity and Social Secretary, Abdulmajid Ibrahim, NARD described the attempted reversal of the allowance structure as unjust and harmful to resident doctors.

The association, however, acknowledged recent interventions that helped prevent the situation from escalating further.

Earlier, resident doctors had embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike scheduled to begin on April 7, 2026, citing concerns over the Federal Government’s alleged plan to halt the implementation of the revised allowance structure, which formed part of agreements reached after their 2025 industrial action.

The strike was later suspended within hours, with the doctors issuing a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to resolve outstanding issues. These include unpaid allowances and the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund.

The decision to suspend the strike followed interventions by the Vice President and the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Muhammad Pate, along with other stakeholders.

NARD urged its members to remain calm and united while discussions with the government continue, reaffirming its commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of resident doctors.

The association also commended Shettima for his prompt response and assurance that the Professional Allowance Table would not be reversed, adding that all pending demands would be addressed after the budget process.
