The Turkey based Super Eagles hitman, Victor Osimhen reportedly set a new Nigerian record in the UEFA Champions League after playing a decisive role in Galatasaray’s narrow victory against the English Premier League outlet— Liverpool.
The UEFA Champions League match summary has it that the Nigerian international provided a crucial assist in the 1–0 first-leg win, taking his tally to eight goal involvements in this season’s competition, the most ever by a Nigerian player in a single Champions League campaign.
The goal assist from the 27-year old Nigerian international against Liverpool took his Champions League tally this season to seven goals and one assist, giving him eight goal involvements in total.
According Nigerian Football statistics record, it is claimed that the milestone places him ahead of several Nigerian greats who previously held the record with six goal contributions in a single campaign.
Some of Nigeria’s players like Tijani Babangida, John Utaka, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Ademola Lookman had six goal involvements in a single season. Osimhen has now beaten that record.
Osimhen’s great form in Europe this season shows that he is becoming a player on the continental stage. The Galatasaray star helped his team get a 1-0 win against Liverpool.
The match was intense with Liverpool trying to score. But Galatasaray defended well and even had chances to score more.
In the seventh minute Osimhen headed a corner back across the goal for Mario Lemina to score, although Osimhen later had chances to score but one was offside and another went just wide.
Liverpool pushed hard for an equaliser but Galatasaray held on to win 1-0. This gives them an advantage before the return match, at Anfield.
