Youth Activist Assaulted: Justice Over Silence

The issue at hand is like an elephant in the room, growing bigger by the day, but nobody dares to speak up about it – progress is painfully slow, held back by unspoken fears and silence. This is the case with the alleged assault of Minnie Uchechi Ogadinma and her mother by Ahoada West Council Chairman Eugene Epelle’s associates, after Ogadinma posted a video highlighting the deplorable state of a school in Odiokwu community, Rivers State.

This brazen attack on a young woman and her family is not just a personal tragedy, but a stark reminder of the dangers of speaking truth to power in our society. Civil society groups and human rights lawyers are calling for justice and threatening legal action against Epelle, but the question remains: will anyone be held accountable?

This case highlights concerns about freedom of expression, youth activism, and local government accountability in Rivers State. The alleged attack was an attempt to silence criticism and suppress public accountability. Ogadinma claims she was physically assaulted and her mother injured when Epelle’s brother and associates visited their home, allegedly on Epelle’s orders. Epelle denies the allegations, claiming Ogadinma was confrontational and fell while being restrained.

But let’s be clear: freedom of expression and youth activism are the catalysts that propel societies forward. When young voices are amplified, and their concerns heard, development accelerates. The recent incident in Rivers State, where a young woman faced alleged assault for speaking out on poor school conditions, underscores the risks of silencing critics. Youth activism, like Minnie Uchechi Ogadinma’s brave act, sheds light on pressing issues, pushing governments to act.

By listening to young people, we can unlock innovative solutions, foster accountability, and drive progress. As Courage Nsirimovu, Director of Pilex Centre for Civic Education, rightly pointed out, Minnie acted within her constitutional rights as a Nigerian citizen to monitor public projects in her community.

We condemn this act of intimidation and demand justice. Epelle must be held accountable for his actions. The people of Rivers State deserve transparency and accountability, not violence and silencing. We call on authorities to investigate and ensure justice is served. The perpetrators must face the full weight of the law. Silence is not an option; justice must prevail.

Green Isaac, Director of Relief International Africa, is calling for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the council chairman, a public apology, and compensation for medical expenses and displacement. We echo these demands and urge all well-meaning Nigerians to join us in calling for justice for Minnie and her family.

The time for silence is over. It’s time to stand up for freedom of expression, youth activism, and accountability. The future of our society depends on it.
