Rivers Deepens Digital Healthcare Push After EMR Training Phase One

The Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB) has intensified its drive toward a modern, technology-enabled health system following the successful completion of Phase One of its Electronic Medical Records (EMR) training programme.

The milestone signals a decisive step in the state’s transition from paper-based records to a fully digital, data-driven primary healthcare framework.

The multi-day training was designed to strengthen health data management, enhance operational efficiency, and improve service delivery across primary healthcare facilities statewide. Participants were equipped with practical skills to capture, manage, and utilise accurate, real-time patient data—an essential foundation for effective planning and improved health outcomes.

The final phase of the training brought together Programme Desk Officers, who received hands-on instruction on leveraging EMR data for monitoring, coordination, reporting, and evidence-based decision-making. Earlier sessions had focused on key cadres within the system, including Heads of Facilities, Health Information Officers, Pharmacists, and Medical Officers of Health. This phased approach, officials said, was intended to ensure broad institutional readiness and smooth adoption of the EMR system across facilities.

According to the Board, the EMR initiative will significantly improve transparency and accountability by replacing manual record-keeping with secure digital processes. Beyond administrative efficiency, the system is expected to enhance continuity of care, reduce errors, and provide timely insights to guide policy and resource allocation.

The RSPHCMB described the completion of Phase One as a critical component of its broader health systems strengthening agenda. With subsequent phases planned, the Board reaffirmed its commitment to building a resilient, efficient, and patient-centred primary healthcare system that meets the evolving needs of Rivers State residents.
