Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has called for improved welfare for officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces in recognition of their sacrifices in defending the nation.
The governor made the call on Sunday during the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day interdenominational service held at the King of Glory Chapel, Government House, Yenagoa.

He said the welfare of military personnel should be prioritised both during active service and after retirement.
Governor Diri lamented the hardships faced by many retired soldiers while processing their pensions and entitlements, noting that some have lost their lives in the process. He described the situation as unacceptable, stressing that those who risk their lives for national security deserve dignity, care and adequate support.
Recalling the recent death of a former classmate who was a retired military officer, the governor said such incidents highlighted the urgent need for reforms in military welfare and retirement systems.
He, however, noted that there were signs of improvement under the current Federal Government and urged sustained commitment from all tiers of government.
The governor also appealed to Nigerians to stop disparaging the military and government on social media, urging citizens instead to appreciate and commend the armed forces for their selfless service. He emphasised that national security depends heavily on the dedication of the military.
Governor Diri further urged serving military and police personnel to remain disciplined, professional and committed in the discharge of their duties.
In a sermon, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Religion, Rev. Godspower Asingba, called on Nigerians to continually pray for and encourage members of the armed forces, noting that they operate under harsh conditions.
The service was attended by top government officials, lawmakers, service commanders, and serving and retired military officers.
