Nigerian Engineer Sets Programming Record

A Nigerian-born cloud engineer, Abel Yakubu, has been officially recognised by Guinness World Records (GWR) for setting a new global benchmark in computer programming education after delivering the world’s longest continuous programming lesson.

Yakubu achieved the feat by teaching for 60 uninterrupted hours, surpassing the previous record of 48 hours and 15 minutes. The marathon lesson was held at the Minds and Emotions Centre in Abuja, Nigeria, between November 21 and November 23, 2025. Guinness World Records confirmed the achievement on December 25, 2025, following a detailed verification process.

During the record-breaking session, Yakubu delivered intensive lessons on cloud computing, covering major platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform, and Microsoft Azure. Drawing from over a decade of professional experience, he guided participants through practical and theoretical aspects of modern cloud infrastructure, security, and deployment.

The event was closely monitored in line with Guinness World Records guidelines. A total of 20 independent witnesses were present to validate the attempt, while 30 participants reportedly stayed through the entire duration of the lesson, highlighting the scale and discipline involved in the challenge.

Speaking after the confirmation of the record, Yakubu said the motivation behind the attempt was to inspire young Africans to pursue advanced digital and technological skills. He noted that as artificial intelligence and cloud-based technologies continue to reshape the global economy, Africa must position itself as a competitive contributor rather than a passive consumer.

Yakubu is currently a cloud engineer with NexEdge Technologies, a Germany-based technology firm. His achievement adds to a growing list of record-breaking feats by Nigerians in recent years, a phenomenon often described as a surge in interest in Guinness World Records attempts across the country.

Observers say the trend reflects a desire among Nigerians to gain global recognition, showcase resilience, and highlight local talent on an international stage. Yakubu’s accomplishment, in particular, has been praised for combining endurance with education, reinforcing the importance of skills development in a rapidly evolving digital world.
