A medical expert has called on the government to adopt stronger, multi-layered strategies to protect people living with HIV/AIDS from discrimination and improve public awareness.

Reacting to reports of high HIV prevalence in Rivers State, Professor Obioma Azuonwu of Rivers State University blamed poor awareness, administrative lapses, and the impact of COVID-19 for the rising figures.

He noted that poverty, risky behaviours, and a shift in focus during the pandemic worsened the situation.
According to him, Nigeria must work more closely with NGOs to revive grassroots advocacy.

Prof. Azuonwu stressed the need for renewed campaigns in churches and schools, proper sterilization of tools in salons, and personal hygiene practices such as carrying personal manicure kits.

He urged Nigerians to prioritize regular HIV testing, as early detection is essential for timely treatment and better health outcomes.
