Rivers House of Assembly Receives Reports on Public Schools

The Rivers State House of Assembly, on Thursday, 27 November 2025, has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara to immediately declare a state of emergency on primary and secondary education across the state.

Presenting the report of the House Committee on Education after an on-the-spot assessment of Township School 2, Port Harcourt, Committee Chairman, Hon. Igwe Aforji, described the institution as a shadow of itself, with classrooms stripped bare, doors, windows, roofing sheets, and furniture looted by vandals.

Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Martin Amaewhule, in his words, questioned the state of schools in rural areas if the ones at the state capital are dilapidated.

“If this is the fate of a school in the heart of Port Harcourt, one can only imagine the tragedy in our rural communities.”

The House summoned the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, and the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board to appear and explain the rot.

In another separate motion, the lawmakers condemned the brazen extortion and harassment of motorists, especially women, by Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIOs) in Port Harcourt.

Describing the VIOs as “a menace,” the Speaker Amaewhule said they had abandoned vehicle inspection for roadside extortion.

The House also resolved to invite the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transport, and the Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer for questioning.

On recent flash flooding, the Assembly also called on the state government to urgently develop a new comprehensive urban master plan that reflects current population growth and climate realities to prevent future disasters.
