Bayelsa Govt Celebrates Maiden Flight of Newly Acquired Aircraft

The administration of Governor Douye Diri has recorded a “landmark feat” on Tuesday, with the successful inaugural flight of one of the state’s two newly acquired aircraft landing at the Bayelsa airport.

The ATR-72/600 aircraft, configured to carry 72 passengers and crew, took off from Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 9:30 AM and touched down in Bayelsa at 10:40 AM.

On board were Governor Diri, the immediate past Deputy Governor Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah, members of the National Assembly Caucus, Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil) Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, NDDC Managing Director Sam Ogbuku, and other dignitaries.

The aircraft was welcomed with the traditional water cannon salute upon arrival amidst “jubilation by a mammoth crowd.”

Diri described the event as historic, stating it underscores his administration’s commitment to connecting the people of the state to the rest of the country and the world by air.

“Six years ago, we promised the people of Bayelsa a future of air connectivity and opportunity. Today, that promise takes wing: Bayelsa is launching its own commercial air services,” Diri stated.

He added that the achievement marks a decisive step in strengthening the state’s aviation capacity and expanding its economic horizons.

The governor also directed that the aircraft, initially registered under the name Pioneer Airline, be immediately changed to Air Bayelsa or Bayelsa Air before commencing commercial operations, as it is state-owned and not a private concern.

He acknowledged his predecessors, particularly the late Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha (who conceptualised the airport) and former Governor Seriake Dickson (who actualised the project).

Managing Director of Bayelsa Airport Limited, Air Vice-Marshal Nelson Calmday (rtd), confirmed that the airline will operate daily on the Lagos and Abuja routes, as well as other Niger Delta states.

Other dignitaries present also hailed the development: Senator Konbowei Benson (for the NASS Caucus) pledged support for the state government’s developmental efforts.

Senator Heineken Lokpobiri lauded Governor Diri and urged the government to sustain the operations by ensuring that government officials pay for flights.

Sam Ogbuku (NDDC MD) welcomed the acquisition, noting it will connect the people, and pledged the commission’s willingness to partner with the airline.

Boladei Igali (PANDEF National Chairman) expressed the region’s pride in Governor Diri’s achievements.

Emmanuel Emefienim (MD/CEO of Premium Trust Bank) expressed joy that the bank played a strategic role in the aircraft’s acquisition.
