Umahi Sets Deadline for Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway Completion

The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has directed Arab Contractors, the firm handling the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway rehabilitation, to complete the remaining 4.5 kilometres of the Abia section by the end of November.

Umahi issued the directive during an inspection visit to the project site in Aba on Friday, expressing dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work. He warned that the contract could be revoked if the deadline was not met.

“I am not happy with the progress of work on this 4.5-kilometre stretch. By the end of November, all laterite, sharp sand, and concrete works must be completed. If not, I will revoke the contract,” Umahi stated.

The minister assured the contractor of prompt payment, emphasizing President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to funding infrastructure projects. He also praised Abia State Governor Alex Otti for supporting federal infrastructure initiatives, describing his development drive as unparalleled.

Umahi instructed the Federal Ministry of Works Controller in Abia to ensure close supervision and said he would personally visit the site weekly to monitor progress.

Governor Otti reaffirmed his administration’s support for the project and expressed optimism that the road would be completed and commissioned by December.

Arab Contractors’ Zonal Manager, Mohammed Elian, confirmed that only five per cent of the project remains, pledging to meet the December deadline. He also commended both the federal and state governments for ensuring security and funding support.

The project covers the stretch from Umuahia Tower to Aba Township, with the Enugu-bound lane already completed and the Port Harcourt-bound lane nearing completion.
