“Poverty Does Not Die By Fire” — Chiwetalu Agu

Veteran Nollywood actor Chiwetalu Agu has challenged a deeply held conviction in a recent viral video on the social media platform X, asserting that collective reliance on prayer is an insufficient solution for widespread poverty.

The acclaimed actor directly dismissed the common notion that poverty can be simply “prayed away.” He articulated a philosophy where lasting prosperity is not a divine gift but the product of human industry, contending that while prayer has its place, it is rendered ineffective without tangible action.

“Yes, prayer connects you to divine wisdom and favour, but work is the channel through which blessings manifest,” he explained.

Agu urged the public to move beyond what he termed a “manna mentality,” a passive hope for providence, and to instead actively embrace diligence and hard work. He emphasised that divine favour is not a substitute for human participation but a complement to it.

“Poverty does not die by fire. I repeat, poverty cannot die by fire, pray from now to tomorrow if you don’t work hard, poverty will deal with you,” Agu stated emphatically.

He further elaborated and delved deeper into the top, emphasising that prayer goes hand in hand with being energetically of intellectually productive. He said, “Yes, prayer is powerful; it connects you to divine wisdom and favour, but work is a channel through which blessings manifest. You can pray all day for success, but if you refuse to walk plan or act, you will remain poor. God blesses effort, not idleness.”
