FUET’s New Era of Collaboration With Ogoni Kingdom

Amidst the Ogoni ongoing crisis and demands for recognition, relevance, and restitution, the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) management’s visit to the King is a significant gesture towards fostering collaboration with the host community. By acknowledging the King’s authority, the university boosts the community’s sense of significance and importance.

This is a beacon of hope for the community, offering numerous benefits and opportunities for growth. By focusing on environmental studies, technology, and sustainability, the university will provide practical solutions to ecological concerns in the Niger Delta region, while training skilled professionals to tackle present environmental challenges.

With Ogoniland grappling with severe environmental degradation due to decades of oil exploration and spills. The region’s water, soil, and air are heavily polluted, with benzene levels far exceeding safe limits, and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) estimates that restoration could take up to 30 years.

The Ogoni people have continuously demanded a comprehensive cleanup, reparations, and sustainable development. Stakeholders are urging the federal government to prioritize environmental justice and provide adequate compensation.

It’s essential for the Ogoni people to be peaceful and collaborative with the university’s management led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Chinedu Mmom to foster stability, security, and mutual support, after the visit to His Royal Majesty, Suanu T. Y. Baridam, JP, ACrb, Amb. P. Mnim, Fins, the Gbenemene & Kasimene Bangha (VII) of Ancient Bangha Kingdom, on Saturday, as this will enable the institution to achieve its full potential, driving academic excellence, innovation, and sustainable development that will ultimately benefit the region.

The establishment of the Federal University of Environment and Technology is a significant step towards addressing historical grievances and fostering inclusive national development.

With the support of the community and the federal government, this institution will play a pivotal role in advancing research and innovation on locally relevant environmental challenges, promoting sustainable development, and supporting Nigeria’s transition to a greener economy.
