Food prices in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, have started to decline, bringing some relief to traders and shoppers after months of steep hikes. A survey across major markets in the city revealed a noticeable reduction in the cost of essential commodities.
At Opolo Market, traders confirmed that prices of beans, groundnut oil, and fresh pepper have dropped compared to previous months. One of the traders, Mrs Glory Chima, noted that although the price cuts are welcome, many customers still struggle to buy even basic food items due to low income levels.
A similar situation was observed at the Swali Ultra-Modern Market, where traders like Miss Miracle Daniel and Mr Divine also reported a drop in the prices of rice, tomatoes, and other staples.

Despite the price reduction, several traders lamented the growing indebtedness among their customers, particularly civil servants and private-sector employees, who often buy goods on credit.
The traders appealed to both government and private employers to ensure the payment of living wages to workers to improve their purchasing power. They stressed that while lower prices are a positive sign, meaningful relief will only come when workers can comfortably afford their daily needs.
According to traders, without stronger income support, the economic pressure on families will continue despite the recent easing of food costs in Yenagoa’s markets.
