Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, has commended Team Nigeria for its impressive performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, describing the country’s athletes as symbols of courage, resilience and national pride after a successful outing.
In a message shared following the conclusion of the Games, Olopade praised the athletes, coaches and officials for their dedication and commitment, noting that Nigeria’s achievement went beyond the medals won.
He said the team’s performances inspired millions of Nigerians and demonstrated that the country’s sporting future remains bright.
Team Nigeria concluded the Games with a total of 24 medals, comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze. The 10 gold medals ensured Nigeria finished as Africa’s best-performing nation at the competition, despite South Africa winning a higher overall medal tally.
Olopade described the medal haul as a reflection of the discipline, determination and hard work of the athletes, saying the success represented the renewed progress of Nigerian sports.
He added that every member of the contingent contributed to restoring confidence in the nation’s sporting ambitions on the global stage.
The NSC boss also expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his continued support for sports development, while acknowledging the contributions of the Commission’s leadership, sports federations, coaches, officials and Nigerians who rallied behind the team throughout the Games. He said their collective efforts played a vital role in the country’s success.
Addressing the athletes, Olopade urged them to remain focused and continue striving for greater achievements, stressing that the Glasgow campaign should serve as a foundation for future international competitions.
He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to its athlete-first policy, promising sustained investment in athlete welfare, preparation and development.
Nigeria’s performance in Glasgow further strengthened its reputation as one of Africa’s leading sporting nations and provided fresh optimism as the country prepares for upcoming continental and global sporting events.
