Nigeria’s preparations for the World Cup qualifiers in October have suffered a significant blow as Raphael Onyedika limped off with a hamstring injury during Club Brugge’s league match against Westerlo.
This setback for the midfielder comes just days after Fisayo Dele-Bashiru was also ruled out, raising serious concerns about the depth of the Super Eagles’ midfield.
Onyedika adds to the injury worries
Onyedika’s night ended prematurely after just 15 minutes when he pulled up while pursuing a long ball, promptly signaling for medical assistance.
The 24-year-old needed help to exit the field, a concerning sight for both Brugge and Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
His injury is particularly ill-timed, considering his outstanding performance this season, where he has played a key role in Brugge’s domestic and European efforts.
Just last week, he was instrumental in their Champions League victory over Monaco, scoring in the decisive 4-1 win. Losing him, even for a short period, could disrupt Brugge’s momentum and deprive Nigeria of an essential midfield player.

Double blow for Nigeria
The timing is particularly unfortunate for the Super Eagles, who have already lost Lazio’s Fisayo Dele-Bashiru to a muscle injury sustained in the Derby della Capitale last weekend. Dele-Bashiru is expected to be out for about a month, making him unavailable for the upcoming qualifiers against Lesotho and the Benin Republic.
With both players out of action, Nigeria’s coach, Eric Chelle, is confronted with a midfield dilemma ahead of crucial matches that are vital for the Super Eagles’ World Cup aspirations.
Onyedika’s defensive strength and Dele-Bashiru’s creativity could have significantly enhanced Nigeria’s midfield, but their absence may necessitate tactical adjustments and reliance on alternative players as the Super Eagles pursue essential points for World Cup qualification.
