Shettima to Lead Nigeria’s Delegation to 80th UN General Assembly

Vice President Kashim Shettima is set to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, following a directive from President Bola Tinubu.

The 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA 80) opened on 9 September 2025. The high-level General Debate will run from 23–27 September and conclude on 29 September 2025.

The SDG Moment will be held on 22 September to highlight inspiring action on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, (Office of the Vice President), disclosed this in a statement on Saturday. The global event will run from Monday, September 22, to Sunday, September 28, 2025.

During his trip, the 59-year-old will attend the commemoration of the UN’s 80th anniversary and participate in the high-level general debates.

The former governor of Borno State will deliver Nigeria’s national statement on Wednesday, September 24, between 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM New York time.

Additionally, Shettima, who served as senator for Borno Central will attend a special climate event for heads of state and government, hosted by the UN Secretary-General. At this meeting, Nigeria is expected to announce its new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

Shettima’s agenda also includes a high-level roundtable on adequate and affordable housing, hosted by the President of Kenya, as well as other bilateral meetings and events.

Following the UNGA session, the alumnus of the University of Maiduguri and the University of Ibadan will travel to Frankfurt, Germany, for a meeting with officials from Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria.
