Tension Erupts at Rivers Government House Over Alleged Unpaid Allowances

A dramatic scene unfolded at the Rivers State Government House on Wednesday when aides to the Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), reportedly protested over unpaid allowances and entitlements.

Sources within the Government House said the aides confronted Ibas as he was preparing to vacate office, accusing him of leaving without settling outstanding payments. The protest, which allegedly involved members of his personal staff and security team, created tension within the premises.

Witnesses told reporters that the situation grew heated until senior officials intervened, appealing for calm and promising that the grievances would be addressed.

The incident comes as Ibas’ tenure as Sole Administrator draws to a close, following months of criticism from some stakeholders over the management of state affairs during his stewardship.

Analysts say the confrontation underscores growing discontent among staff and raises questions about accountability as the administrator prepares to hand over.

Efforts to reach Ibas or his media team for comments on the matter were unsuccessful as of press time.
