FG Completes 10 Diagnostic Centres, 3 Cancer Facilities Nationwide

The Federal Government has completed 10 radiodiagnostic centres and three cancer treatment facilities across Nigeria as part of efforts to reduce medical tourism and expand access to advanced healthcare services locally.

The government is also preparing to establish six multi-specialty hospitals, with one planned for each of the country’s six geopolitical zones, to strengthen the availability of specialist medical care.

The Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, disclosed this in a post on his official X handle on Tuesday.

He said the radiodiagnostic centres were delivered through MedServe and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), with the facilities designed to improve access to modern diagnostic services while supporting medical training and research.

Among the completed projects is a radiodiagnostic centre at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, while another facility in Ibadan, Oyo State, is scheduled for commissioning.

Olusegun quoted the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, as describing the development as the largest expansion of healthcare infrastructure and equipment in Nigeria’s history.

Pate also disclosed that three cancer centres had been completed under the broader healthcare transformation programme.

The investments are aimed at addressing gaps in Nigeria’s healthcare system that have forced patients requiring advanced diagnostics, cancer treatment and other specialised procedures to seek care abroad.

President Bola Tinubu had, during the launch of the healthcare expansion programme in Bauchi in August 2024, identified the development of advanced diagnostic and oncology facilities as a key strategy for reducing outbound medical tourism.

The programme builds on earlier NSIA-backed investments, including a cancer treatment facility at Lagos University Teaching Hospital and diagnostic centres in Kano and Umuahia.

Beyond the completed facilities, Olusegun said the Federal Government was preparing to establish six major multi-specialty hospitals across the six geopolitical zones.

He said the investments would expand access to specialised medical services while strengthening Nigeria’s capacity for diagnosis, treatment, training and research.

The government expects the expansion to reduce the financial burden on Nigerians seeking treatment abroad and retain more foreign exchange within the domestic economy.

Olusegun said the projects formed part of a broader effort to modernise Nigeria’s healthcare system through improved infrastructure, advanced medical equipment and stronger collaboration between the Federal Government and state governments.
