NARD Suspends Strike, Give FG Two Weeks to Meet Demand

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has called off its five-day warning strike just two days after it began, granting the Federal Government a two-week window to meet its outstanding commitments to doctors.

NARD President, Dr. Tope Osundara, confirmed on Sunday that the decision was made in good faith to ease the burden on Nigerians and give authorities time to resolve the union’s grievances.

He said the association would review the government’s progress during its Annual General Meeting on September 26, where members will decide whether to resume the action.

“This step is a show of goodwill toward the government and the public,” Osundara explained. “We hope that, within the two-week grace period, authorities will address every issue highlighted in our demands.”

He emphasised that the union remains firm on its requests, which include:
Immediate payment of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund, Settlement of five months’ arrears from the 25–35 per cent salary adjustment under CONMESS, Clearance of the 2024 accoutrement allowance backlog, Prompt disbursement of specialist allowances, Restoration of recognition for the West African postgraduate membership certificates by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.

NARD is also urging the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria to issue certificates to all qualified candidates, full implementation of the 2024 CONMESS, and resolution of welfare challenges affecting members in Kaduna State and at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso.

The strike, which began on September 12 after a series of ultimatums dating back to July, was aimed at pressing for improved welfare and the settlement of unpaid entitlements for resident doctors across the country.
