Nigerian Team Sails Out to World Athletics Championships

‎According to a recent report, the Nigerian team left for Tokyo, Japan, yesterday to get ready for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, which will start on Saturday, September 13.

‎The report says that although some athletes who are based in the U.S. are already in Tokyo, the group that left includes both athletes from Nigeria and officials.

‎Last week, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) shared a list of 15 athletes, with eight being men and seven being women.

‎The team is led by Tobi Amusan, who holds the world record in the 100m hurdles and won the 2022 world championship. She is working hard to return to her best form.

‎She will be joining Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, who is known for his shot put skills, and Ezekiel Nathaniel, a young talent in the 400m hurdles.

‎The team also includes Ese Brume, the long jump champion who holds Africa’s best record with a jump of 7.17 meters.
‎Brume has good memories of Tokyo, where she had success before, and she is hoping to win a medal again.

‎Amusan is the only world champion Nigeria has in athletics, and she won that title by taking gold at the 2022 event in Oregon, USA.

‎Other athletes selected include: Samuel Ogazi (400m); Kayinsola Ajayi (100m); Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons (Discus); Prestina Ochonogor (Long Jump); Obiageri Amaechi (Discus); Charles Godfred (Long Jump); Rosemary Chukwuma (100m) ; Oyesade Olatoye (Hammer); Israel S. Okon (100m) and Chidi Okezie (400m).
