Wike Dismisses Amaechi’s Presidential Bid as ‘Dead on Arrival’

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has stated that former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi’s aspiration to become president in 2027 is a non-starter.

In an interview on Channels Television’s “Politics Today”, Wike stated that Amaechi would not be able to secure the presidential nomination of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and that the Nigerian populace would not consider him a viable candidate.

Wike mocked Amaechi’s recent claims that he knows President Bola Tinubu’s weaknesses, a sentiment Amaechi also held in 2022 when he was soundly defeated by Tinubu in the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary. “

He (Amaechi) knows he won’t get the ticket,” Wike said. “He also knew the weaknesses of the president in 2022 when the president defeated him mercilessly in the primary.”

According to Wike, Amaechi’s past performance in office disqualifies him from being considered a serious contender.

He added that Amaechi’s alleged lack of respect for the rule of law while serving as Rivers State governor between 2007 and 2015 makes him unfit to lead the country.

“He cannot fight corruption, he cannot enthrone good governance because he had no respect for the judiciary and the rule of law,” Wike stated.

Amaechi, who governed Rivers State for eight years, defected from the APC to the ADC in 2025 to pursue his presidential ambitions.

His long-standing political rivalry with Wike, his successor as governor, continues to be a defining feature of political discourse in the region.
