‘We’re not worried’ – Nigeria’s Super Falcons laugh off pressure of WAFCON finals

This Super Falcons team is on the verge of making history in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations… yet, you wouldn’t realize it when speaking to the Nigerian players, who are firmly dismissing any discussions of last-minute jitters as the West African powerhouses approach their 10th title.

A win against the reigning champions, South Africa, in Tuesday’s semifinal has positioned Nigeria for an exciting final against the tournament hosts, Morocco, in Rabat this weekend. This Super Falcons squad is determined to reclaim the continental title for the first time since 2018.

Not only would a victory erase the painful memories from the last tournament in 2022, where Nigeria – the most successful team in WAFCON history – suffered three losses and finished in fourth place, but it would also achieve Nigeria’s ‘Decima’, marking the country’s record 10th title.

Head coach Justin Mudugu has labeled this goal as ‘Mission X’, giving it a distinct identity and significance, and thus far, this ambitious target does not seem to be burdening the Super Falcons.

“We’re not concerned about the pressure,” striker Esther Okoronkwo told ESPN. “People talk, there’s always chatter from the outside, but we’re not focused on that; our focus is on the cup, winning it, and bringing it back to Nigeria. That’s all that matters to us.

“Winning the cup is our goal,” she continued. “That has been our motivation from the very beginning, and it will always be our motivation – to win it.”

In addition to the honor of securing title number 10, a win on Saturday would also prevent the undesirable distinction of being the first Nigerian team in history to go two consecutive editions of the tournament without winning the title, a scenario that would have seemed unimaginable until recent years.
