NGO, Rivers, Others Launches Insect Farming Centre, Targets to Train 23,000 Youths

A major agricultural boost is underway in Rivers State as ASEF International, in partnership with the Rivers State Cooperative Federation (RCF) and Everand Business Support Services (EBS), has launched the Nonachi Insect Farming Training Centre in Port Harcourt.

The centre is the first phase of Project Waste4Meal, an initiative backed by Dutch partner New Generation Nutrition (NGN), aiming to train 23,000 youths and women in insect farming and circular agriculture.

Unveiled recently at Hotel Presidential, the project promotes eco-friendly farming using Black Soldier Flies to convert organic waste into livestock feed, fertiliser, and other by-products.

With N20.45 billion earmarked for investment, the programme plans to establish 100 larvarium clusters producing up to 150 tons of insect larvae and 600 tons of organic fertiliser monthly—feeding into a broader farming ecosystem covering poultry, aquaculture, rabbitry, and greenhouse operations.

Speaking at the event, ASEF CEO, Mrs Rosemary Adebayo, said insect-based feed could cut livestock production costs while ensuring sustainability. “Black Soldier Fly larvae are a rich protein source and turn waste into value,” she noted.

Rivers PAN Chairman, Mr Afonwa Charles, praised the effort, calling insect meal a “cost-effective and safe” alternative for livestock feed. He confirmed trials on demo farms showed positive results.

The state government also pledged support through public-private partnerships. Mr Maurice Ogolo, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, said the project aligns with the state’s vision to engage youth in agriculture.

RCF President Hon. Brilliant Amadi highlighted the role of cooperatives in scaling the initiative, while EBS founder Lt. Cmdr. (Rtd) Chikeziri assured that infrastructure and security measures would sustain the project long term.

Although full-scale operations are set for 2026, training has already begun, with enrolment now open to youths and women eager to explore insect-based agribusiness.
