YEAC-Nigeria Commends Air Peace Pilots, Urges Enhanced Training After Runway Excursion Incident

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) has joined Nigerians and the international aviation community in expressing gratitude for the safety of all passengers and crew members aboard Air Peace Flight P47190, following a runway excursion incident at the Port Harcourt Domestic Wing of the Obafemi Jeremiah Awolowo International Airport.

The Boeing 737-300 aircraft, which departed from Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, veered off the runway upon landing in Port Harcourt earlier today. Thankfully, no casualties were reported.

YEAC-Nigeria acknowledged the critical challenges involved in aircraft landings, particularly under adverse weather conditions such as wet and slippery runways.

“Landing is one of the most sensitive phases of flight, with aircraft often touching down at speeds between 220 and 265 kilometres per hour. These conditions demand utmost professionalism and precision.”

The group commended the Air Peace pilots for their composure and expertise in managing the situation, highlighting that human error, though unfortunate, is sometimes inevitable. “No matter the level of training or experience, no one is perfect.

“We recognise the professionalism exhibited by the flight crew in averting a major disaster.”

In a call for continuous improvement, the advocacy centre urged Air Peace to strengthen its pilot re-training programmes, with particular focus on wet-weather operations and landing procedures.

“We encourage the airline to enhance pilot vigilance and technical proficiency, especially during rainy seasons, to reduce the risk of future runway excursions.”

YEAC-Nigeria concluded by thanking God for his protection and called on Air Peace to adopt more proactive safety measures to prevent similar occurrences.

“We are grateful for the safe outcome of this incident and look forward to the implementation of improved safety protocols by Air Peace management,” the organisation added.
