For nearly a year, the people of Bille have lived beside water that bubbles when it should not. Now the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has deployed a Norwegian company to run tests across the Kingdom, from the air, on the surface, and underwater. Its job is to find where the gas is coming from and give the government scientific analysis for a lasting fix.
After so many months of visits and promises, this is the news Bille needed. Good science is the first honest step toward a solution.
There is plenty for the tests to explain. NUPRC has said the community’s first aquifer is contaminated. The environmental agency NOSDRA has confirmed hydrogen sulphide, methane, and other gases at several points. It also found bubbling at a school that has since been abandoned. Methane burns and hydrogen sulphide poisons, so every day without an answer is a day of risk for a community of tens of thousands.
Even so, no operator has been linked to the seepage, and NUPRC reports no pipelines in the immediate area. That is exactly why independent testing matters. If the Norwegian team can trace the source, the guessing ends, and the work of fixing it can begin.
But here is the part that matters most to the people who live there. Residents say earlier air, soil and water tests were carried out and the results never reached them. This time must be different. A family that drinks the water and breathes the air deserves to hear the findings in plain language, not wait for a technical report to surface months later. Civil society groups have already asked for earlier results to be published, and the new tests give government a chance to start again with openness.
So the standard is clear. Tell the community what the gas is. Tell them where it comes from. Tell them whether the water is safe to drink and the ground safe to live on. Then give a date for the fix, and keep to it.
Hiring experts is the beginning of the answer, not the end. The measure of this mission will be what changes for the woman fetching water and the fisherman reading the creek.
Bille deserves answers. Bille deserves a lasting solution.
