An environmental resource manager, Meshack Uyi, has warned that poor consideration of communities’ topography along the Port Harcourt ring road project may be exacerbating recurrent floods in some parts of Rivers State.
Uyi, in an interview with Nigeria Info on Tuesday, urged improved environmental planning, availability of reliable flood data, and enactment of laws to help alleviate the perennial flooding in various communities in the state.
He urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to take action by developing a state emergency management law in addition to the visit of the state’s lawmakers to the various flood-ravaged communities.
According to him, the Flood Management Committee should quickly collate reliable information on affected communities and residents’ profiles to enable them to provide relief and other forms of aid to the affected people.

Another environmental resource manager and lecturer at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Dr Christian Otiahasa, also named the Port Harcourt ring road project as one of the factors responsible for the increase in flood incidents in some parts of the state.
Otiahasa urged Nigerians to demand action from political aspirants by asking them to provide functional proposals on how they intend to tackle the persistent floods before casting their votes.
He asked voters to continue pressing politicians on their plan for dealing with the perennial flooding as residents are still suffering under the persisting challenges.
