Rivers United are set to return to winning ways when they entertain Ikorodu City in a Matchday 7 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash on Sunday, October 4 at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
The Pride of Rivers are coming into the encounter unbeaten after six league fixtures, with three wins and three draws putting them on 12 points. A 1-1 draw away to Katsina United on Wednesday extended their unbeaten streak, but leaves Finidi George’s men two points adrift of league leaders Rangers.
Rivers United will be desperate to take advantage of their home advantage after slipping up in their last two fixtures against Ranchers Bees and Katsina United. Before their recent lull, they conjured up a 5-0 rout of Kun Khalifat, before recording consecutive 2-0 home victories over Warri Wolves and Plateau United.
However, Ikorodu City will fancy their chances after a famous 2-0 home victory over defending champions Rangers on September 27. The Lagos-based side drew goalless with Sporting Lagos after that, leaving them unbeaten in their last two matches.
The visitors have been in good form on the back of a 3-1 win over Ranchers Bees and draws with Abia Warriors and Barau FC. They will test the resolve of visiting Rivers United.
With only a point between the top two teams after six rounds, a victory would be sweet for Rivers United in their chase of the summit. The official NPFL fixture list has the encounter scheduled for 4pm on Sunday.
Finidi is expected to retain his starting XI, but the tight schedule could tempt him to rotate after three fixtures in six days.
Rivers United will be hoping for their home form to shine through, but the defensive displays of Ikorodu City suggest they have to work for the points.
