The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Prof. Orluwene, has said that the closer cooperation between the teaching hospital and the Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Hospital could position Rivers State as a world-class centre for medical care, research and training.
This was contained in a statement signed by Kem Daniel- Elebiga, the Head of Media & Publicity to UPTH on Tuesday.
Orlwene stated this while on a courtesy visit with officials of UPTH to the Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Hospital, to discuss possible ways of collaboration and cooperation, to add value to the state’s health sector.

The CMD of UPTH, who was at the helm of the efforts that led to the conception, execution and activation of the hospital, was delighted with the maintained standard of the facilities at the hospital and welcomed closer cooperation in research, training and offering healthcare services.
He said the combined effort of the two hospitals, which had proven specialist skills in their respective areas, would go a long way in improving the quality of healthcare services being offered to the people of Rivers State and the South-South.
Orlwene further pledged the full support of UPTH for the free mammography screening, which Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Hospital was to commence on October 24, 2026.
He described the gesture as a good start, which would benefit the women in Rivers State and beyond.
Noting the rising cases of cancer in the South-South, especially amongst women, the CMD further urged the need for a more aggressive stance in the fight against the life-threatening disease.
Earlier in the day, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Peter Odili Cancer and Cardiovascular Disease Hospital, Dr Toni Rahne, expressed delight at the visit, and the opportunity to show the UPTH officials around the facilities.
In his welcome speech, Rahne also sought UPTH’s support in research data, as well as the free mammography screening for women.
The day’s events wound up with an interactive session between the officials of the two hospitals, as well as a tour of the facilities.
The visitors comprised the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Richard Echem, Director of Administration, Ms Erebi Wadiri, Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee, Prof. Omosivie Maduka, Prof. Kennedy Nkporbu, among others.
