Aliko Dangote has leaned into the meme frenzy surrounding his refinery’s public offer, joking that he has been fielding calls for board meetings from Nigerians who now consider themselves part-owners of the business.
The billionaire remarked during a conversation with Bloomberg’s Francine Lacqua at the 2026 Qatar Economic Forum, where he discussed his company’s investment strategy across Africa.
Speaking on partnerships, Dangote said the company operates independently but remains open to bringing in more investors and partners.
He added, with humour, that the calls have already started, a nod to the wave of social media jokes sparked by the Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s IPO. The offer opened in mid-September, putting more than four billion shares on sale at ₦525 each.

With a minimum buy-in of just 10 shares, or ₦5,250 (roughly $4 at current rates), the low entry point has drawn in thousands of everyday Nigerians, many of whom have taken to social media to jokingly declare themselves “oil tycoons,” co-founders and full business partners of Dangote.
The jokes have spread widely across X, Instagram and TikTok, with users posting skits about summoning “Aliko” for emergency board meetings, demanding operational updates from refinery staff, and checking in on “our refinery” as though they hold corner offices.
One viral post shows a user calling a mock shareholder meeting, another features a man in a suit announcing he is flying to Lagos to inspect “his investment,” while a third jokes about no longer paying rent because refinery dividends are on the way.
Beneath the humour lies genuine excitement around the offer, which Dangote has marketed as a “people’s IPO.” The refinery posted an after-tax profit of $1.82 billion in the first half of 2026.
The offer closes on October 13, with allotment and listing to follow. At the Qatar forum, Dangote appeared to enjoy the moment, not dismissing the jokes but confirming the calls were coming, and that more partners are welcome.
