REA Rolls Out 60.82MW Renewable Energy Projects Across Six States

The Federal Government, through the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), is set to add a total of 60.82 megawatts of renewable energy capacity through the rollout of interconnected hybrid mini-grid projects across six states.

The milestone was marked on Wednesday with the groundbreaking of a 13.92-megawatt-peak solar hybrid mini-grid project in Yobe State, bringing the combined capacity of the agency’s recently launched projects to 60.82MW.

According to the REA, earlier projects include a 20MW mini-grid in Egume, Kogi State; an 11.9MWp project in Ogu-Bolo, Rivers State; a 10MW installation in Kofare, Adamawa State; a 3.5MW project in Ambursa, Kebbi State; and a 1.5MW mini-grid in Pankshin, Plateau State.

Supported by the World Bank, the Yobe project will deliver 13.92MWp of renewable energy through solar installations located in Nguru, Potiskum, Gashua, Rugan Fulani and Waziri Ibrahim Estate in Damaturu.

The project also includes 40 distribution transformers to improve electricity supply, enhance grid stability and stimulate economic activities in the benefiting communities.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni said the project aligns with his administration’s commitment to building resilient infrastructure that supports industrial growth and agricultural productivity.

REA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Abba Abubakar Aliyu, said the interconnected hybrid mini-grids are designed to integrate seamlessly with existing distribution networks while expanding access to reliable electricity.

He said the projects would create opportunities for businesses, improve healthcare delivery, support agricultural processing and drive economic growth in underserved communities.

Aliyu also disclosed that the agency has 14 additional renewable energy projects in the pipeline for Yobe State, with a combined capacity of 15.3MWp.

He said the projects are expected to provide 23,870 new electricity connections, benefiting communities including Jawur Katamma, Federal Polytechnic Damaturu and Dibbwol.
