The Nigerian Navy has dismantled an illegal fuel storage and distribution facility in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State, recovering about 13,000 litres of suspected illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), also known as diesel.
The operation was carried out by personnel of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Bonny under Operation Delta Sentinel. The Navy disclosed this in a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho.
According to the statement, the operatives uncovered several storage tanks, reservoirs, drums, hoses and other equipment believed to have been used for the illegal storage and distribution of petroleum products.
Captain Folorunsho said preliminary findings indicate that the facility was being used for unlawful petroleum activities. He added that investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice.
He explained that the operation is part of the Nigerian Navy’s continued efforts to curb crude oil theft, illegal bunkering and other forms of economic sabotage in the Niger Delta.
The Navy reiterated its commitment to protecting the nation’s oil and gas assets through sustained surveillance and enforcement operations. It also assured the public that efforts to disrupt illegal refining activities and safeguard the country’s economic resources would continue across the region.
