The Obio/Akpor Local Government Council has announced a total ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as Okada, within its area, citing security, safety, and public order concerns.
In a statement by Dr. Gift Worlu, the prohibition, which takes effect from August 1, 2026, aims to tackle persistent issues with traffic chaos, road accidents, and criminal activities linked to some commercial motorcycle operators.
It noted that the ban forms part of broader efforts by the administration to make the local government safer and better organised for residents.
“The operation of commercial motorcycles for passenger transportation within Obio/Akpor Local Government Area shall cease with effect from 1st August, 2026,” the statement read.

The council emphasised that the move is in the overriding interest of protecting lives and property. Residents have been urged to comply fully with the directive.
According to the statement, the ban does not affect private motorcycle owners using their bikes for personal purposes, provided they adhere to existing traffic laws.
Dispatch riders, licensed courier and logistics companies, emergency responders, and security agencies will also continue to operate unhindered.
The council said enforcement will involve relevant security agencies and authorised local government officials, and commercial operators should wind down operations and explore alternative means of livelihood on or before July 31, 2026.
Dr. Worlu appealed to residents, transport operators, business owners, and community leaders to cooperate with the government, describing the policy as necessary for building “a safer, cleaner, and more prosperous” Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
