The Vice Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Nyeche Joyce, on Wednesday visited Rumuokwachi Community in Ward 16 to assess the sorry state of their access road, which has been rendered impassable by persistent flooding.
In his remarks, the Traditional ruler of Rumuokwachi Community, HRH Eze Okechukwu Chinda (JP), said the worsening condition of the road and the devastating impact of floodwaters have negatively affected homes and businesses in the area.
The Traditional Ruler used the occasion to appeal to the government to immediately suspend the ongoing Ring Road project, which he claimed was severely aggravating the community’s plight.
The Community Liaison Officer to Julius Berger, Mr. Amadi Bon Chituru, attributed the flooding to the blockage of a major canal allegedly sealed with cement by residents of neighbouring Rumuwokeada Community in Ogbogoro.
Mr. Chituru further revealed that the drainage project in the area was abandoned midway by the Ministry of Works during the administration of former Rivers State Governor, Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

“The devastating flood has forced many residents and business owners to abandon their homes and seek shelter elsewhere,” he stated.
Responding to the concerns raised, Vice Chairman Dr. Joyce Nyeche assured the community that the council chairman, Hon. Dr. Gift Worlu, would immediately engage the Commissioner for Works to address the situation urgently.
“The chairman is committed to finding lasting solutions to the challenges facing our people. We will not rest until this matter is resolved,” she said.
Also present at the assessment was the Councillor representing Ward 16, Hon. Joy Chinyeru Michael, who commended the chairman for his prompt response and described him as a responsive and proactive leader.
She said the visit underscores the determination of the Obio/Akpor Local Government Council to tackle infrastructure challenges head-on and improve the living conditions of residents across the area.
