The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), has increase its collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) to enhance electricity provision and the development of renewable energy in Nigeria.
On a working visit to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the team from the AfDB, led by Mr. Chigoziri Egeruoh, made NERC familiar with achievements registered under the Nigeria Electrification Project (NEP).
They talked about some of the achievements so far registered especially in providing power to communities that were underserved and unserved.
They further discussed some of the measures being taken to upscale efforts towards bridging the access deficit for electricity in Nigeria. One of the key achievements during their visit was the launch of the AfDB “Desert to Power” project.
The project is regarded as one of the flag ship initiatives geared towards the development of renewable energy and involves utilizing solar energy in the Sahel region of Africa to provide sustainable electricity to millions of people.
NERC further engaged a delegation of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) headed by the Commission’s Director General, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, in yet another meeting where talks were on institutional cooperation and coordinated efforts towards advancing energy efficiency and sustainability in Nigeria’s energy sector.
These two meetings clearly demonstrate NERC’s desire to establish strong working relationships with key partners in order to overcome electricity problems.
Indeed, all stakeholders agreed that through the use of the expertise and finances provided by these two institutions, the commission is set to accelerate reforms and ensure access to electricity in the country.
