NIGERIAN YOUTHS URGED NOT TO BE USED AS TOOLS FOR VIOLENCE

Nigerian Youths have been advised not to allow themselves being used as tools for violence, misinformation, and other activities that could undermine the country’s democratic process.

President Bola Tinubu who gave the advice in his message delivered by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, during the National Inter-Denominational Church Service held at the National Christian Centre in Abuja as part of activities commemorating the 2026 Democracy Day celebration urged the youths not to sacrifice their future for the temporary benefits offered by politicians.

The event, themed “God of Hope, Actualise Our Dreams,” attracted several top government officials, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Okezie Kalu, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, and the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack.

Senator Akume who represented the President on the occasion congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance since 1999.

He described the achievement as a reflection of the resilience, determination, and sacrifices of citizens who fought tirelessly for the return and sustenance of democracy.

The SGF paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 democratic struggle, noting that many endured persecution, injuries, and even death in their quest for a democratic Nigeria.

Addressing the current challenges facing the nation, Senator Akume acknowledged the economic difficulties, insecurity, kidnappings, and displacement affecting many communities across the country.

He assured Nigerians that the government is fully aware of their struggles and remains committed to addressing them.

According to him, President Tinubu understands the pains of ordinary Nigerians and is tackling the challenges with compassion, determination, and a strong sense of responsibility.

On the issue of security, he described recent attacks and kidnappings as unfortunate and painful reminders that more efforts are still required.

However, he assured citizens that the safe return of those in captivity remains a top national priority stressing that security agencies are receiving the necessary support and resources needed to protect lives, secure communities, and defend Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

“The government of Nigeria shall never succumb to terror, banditry, or any form of criminal intimidation,” he declared.

As political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum, Senator Akume called on Nigerians to reject violence, hate speech, and divisive rhetoric. He stressed that democracy should never become a battlefield for political interests.

He particularly appealed to young Nigerians not to allow themselves to be manipulated by politicians for thuggery, election violence, misinformation campaigns, ethnic hostility, or religious intolerance.

“Do not rent out your conscience for money, drugs, political patronage, or online applause. Your future is worth more than any politician’s temporary convenience” he advised.

He also urged religious leaders, traditional rulers, civil society groups, the media, and families to continue promoting peace, unity, tolerance, and national cohesion as the country prepares for another election cycle.

The SGF further commended members of the armed forces and other security agencies for their dedication and sacrifices in protecting Nigeria’s democracy and ensuring national stability.
