Nigeria has said it is strengthening its emergency response capacity through a partnership with Starlink, the satellite internet service operated by SpaceX, to improve communication during disasters.
In a statement posted on his official X handle on Tuesday, Vice President Kashim Shettima said the development reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to improving emergency and disaster management in the country.
Shettima spoke in Abuja when he received a delegation comprising technical teams from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and SpaceX at the Presidential Villa.
He commended the donation of specialised communication equipment to NEMA by Starlink, describing it as a boost to emergency coordination and response efforts.
The Vice President said effective communication remains central to disaster response, especially in situations such as flooding and other emergencies.
He noted that improved communication systems would enhance NEMA’s ability to respond quickly and coordinate operations across affected areas.
Shettima said the partnership with Starlink is part of broader efforts to deploy modern technology in strengthening Nigeria’s emergency management system.
“Communication is the essence of humanity, and during emergencies and flood disasters, partnerships with Starlink can come in handy,” he said.
He added that strengthening communication infrastructure would help save lives and improve coordination among emergency responders.
The Vice President reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to working with global technology partners to improve disaster preparedness and response across the country.
