Rivers United has made it to the round of 16 in the President Federation Cup, after they beat Enugu Rangers 3-2 in a match in Uyo on Monday. The team from Port Harcourt started strong, they scored five minutes after the start of the game through Chijioke Mbaoma.
As the game progressed, Rivers United scored again in the 34th minute through Wisdom Samuel who cut inside, shot low into the corner and made it 2-0 up at halftime.
Enugu Rangers on the other hand, came back strong after halftime they almost let Rivers score a goal in the 50th minute, as Monday Daniel made a headed pass but the Goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh quickly denied Mbaoma from close range.
The NPFL champions eventually got back, into the match, when they got a penalty on the hour mark and Godwin Obaje scored it into the roof of the net reducing the deficit to 2-1.
Rangers equalized in a few minutes after the first goal— Precious Agu reacted fastest in the box slotted home from close range and the score was 2-2.
When the match seemed to be going to end time, then drama happened in stoppage time as Rivers United scored in a sequence. Rangers players protested, saying there was a foul on their goalkeeper.
The referee let the goal stand, Rivers United took a 3-2 lead in the closing moments, in spite of Rangers protests Rivers United held on, they secured a win and eliminated the reigning NPFL champions.
Rivers United moved to the Round of 16 stage of the President Federation Cup, Enugu Rangers are out after a spirited comeback ended in heartbreak.
