A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has ruled that former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan can legally participate in the 2027 presidential election.
The judgment settles lingering debates over whether Jonathan, who completed the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua before serving a full term of his own, can still seek another term in office under Nigeria’s constitutional provisions.
In its decision, the court held that Jonathan’s previous time in office does not prevent him from standing as a candidate in the next presidential contest.
The ruling is expected to generate fresh political conversations across the country as discussions around the 2027 elections continue to gather momentum.
Jonathan served as Nigeria’s president between 2010 and 2015 after first assuming office as acting president following Yar’Adua’s prolonged illness.
He later won the 2011 presidential election before losing his re-election bid in 2015.
Although the former president has not publicly declared any intention to contest the 2027 election, the court’s verdict is likely to fuel renewed speculation about a possible political comeback.
