No fewer than 1,800 families in Rivers State on Thursday benefited from the Renewed Hope Initiative Food Outreach Programme as wives of 14 state governors and other top dignitaries converged on the Rivers State Government House.
The high-profile event was attended by the wives of 14 governors, the wife of the Chief of Staff to the President, and several other notable figures.
Representing the Wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu, said the food outreach scheme was designed to support vulnerable families across the country.
Edu explained that the initiative, backed by two strategic partners, has made it possible to reach two states every month. She disclosed that distributions had already been carried out in 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with Rivers State emerging as the 26th beneficiary.
“The initiative is designed to complement the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu by promoting food sufficiency and providing support for vulnerable groups,” she said.
She added that food banks stocked with essential food items would be established in primary healthcare centres across all local government areas to specifically support pregnant women and lactating mothers.

In her remarks, Rivers State Deputy Governor, Professor Ngozi Odu, described the programme as one that not only provides immediate relief but also restores dignity to vulnerable families.

Professor Odu noted that the intervention underscored the importance of viewing social investment as a responsibility rather than mere charity. She said the programme aligned perfectly with the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s commitment to the socio-economic well-being of Rivers people.
The Wife of the Rivers State Governor, Valeria Fubara, commended Senator Oluremi Tinubu for the initiative, saying it had continued to empower families and vulnerable persons across the state.
“It is a reflection of people-centred governance and a reassurance that residents have not been forgotten,” Mrs Fubara said.
She revealed that more than 5,000 persons had benefited from previous interventions under the Renewed Hope Initiative in the state, excluding the latest 1,800 families covered in Thursday’s distribution.
Mrs Fubara also appreciated Governor Siminalayi Fubara for his consistent support for programmes aimed at improving the socio-economic wellbeing of residents.
