Man Arrested for Alleged Defilement of Neighbour’s 16-Year-Old Daughter

Operatives of the Special Area Rumudomaya aka Rumuokoro Police Division attached to Rivers State Police Command have arrested one Goodnews in his late 20s over alleged defilement of his neighbour’s sixteen-year-old daughter along Apu road, Rukpokwu in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

In an interview with our correspondent, a family friend of the victim’s parents, Chidi Obulor, the incident occurred on Monday, May 4, 2026, when the suspect, who resides in the same compound as the victim, under the guise of sending her an errand, tricked the teenage girl into his apartment and allegedly defiled her.

Obulor disclosed that following a formal complaint by the parents of the teenage girl, operatives of Special Area Rumudomaya swung into action and arrested the suspect while the victim was rushed to a hospital where medical examination was conducted on her and treatment was administered.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of Rivers State Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police, ASP Blessing Agabe, confirmed the incident to our correspondent. “I can confirm the arrest of the suspect by operatives of Special Area Rumudomaya. Investigation has commenced”, she said.

Meanwhile, a Human Rights Advocate, Prince Wiro, the National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign, has criticized some persons under the umbrella of a particular organization in the area for attempting to initiate a settlement in the matter.

“The victim’s parents are the nominal complainants in the matter, but the crime is not only against the victim, but it’s also against the State. Crimes of this nature are intentional, not a mistake, and when perpetrators escape facing justice by way of settlement, it emboldens others to commit the same crime”, he said.

Wiro called on the Police to ensure a thorough investigation is carried out, adding that if the suspect is found culpable in the course of the investigation, he should be made to face the law.

As at press time, it was gathered that efforts are being made to transfer the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, SCIID Port Harcourt for detailed investigation.
