The Rivers State Government has suspended Wisdom Gate International School, Eligbolo Campus, after the death of a two‑year‑old pupil on March 17.
In a press statement issued Wednesday, April 15 by the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Dr. Peters Nwagor, the Ministry said the decision followed an independent investigation into the incident.
The Commissioner explained that officials had engaged with the school’s management and reviewed circumstances surrounding the tragedy before taking action.
“While we deeply sympathize with the parents of the child over the irreparable loss, and respect their privacy during this moment of grief, we appeal to members of the public to do the same and avoid speculations,” Dr. Nwagor stated.
The government ordered Wisdom Gate International School, Campus 1, Eligbolo, closed down and directed that it “shall not resume academic activities until all issues surrounding the matter are fully resolved.”
The statement added that the intervention aims to ensure accountability and restore public confidence in the safety of schools across Rivers State.

Dr. Nwagor stressed that the Ministry remains committed to enforcing standards of care and safety in both public and private institutions.
He noted that quality assurance measures will continue to be strengthened, with particular attention to child protection and sustainability.
The Commissioner further urged stakeholders to avoid speculation and allow the investigation process to run its course. He assured parents and guardians that the Ministry will continue to monitor schools closely to prevent similar tragedies.
The suspension underscores the government’s resolve to prioritize student welfare and maintain accountability in the education sector, even as the affected family mourns their loss.
