South-South APC Elects New Leaders, Pledges Support for Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-South on Wednesday re-elected Chief Victor Giadom as its chairman.

The APC South-South Zonal Congress in Asaba, Delta State saw him and seven other zonal executives of the party win election.

At the same congress, key party leaders from across the South-South – including Senate President, governors, lawmakers and delegates — came to underscore the increasingly powerful political hand of the APC in the region.

Emomotimi Guwor, the Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, moved to dissolve the outgoing Zonal Executive Committee, marking the start of proceedings.

Abraham Ingobere seconded the motion and delegates unanimously adopted the motion.

According to Giadom, the meeting of the region’s six governors, lawmakers, ministers and other key stakeholders was a demonstration of how far the zone has determined to bring back all APC candidates in the next election.

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri stated that the APC’s adoption of a consensus method for selecting its officials is expected to strengthen and promote unity before the 2027 general election.

According to Diri, the APC’s political platform has brought all South-South regions together politically, and he believes that participation in national decision-making is crucial.

During his bid for governorship in 2019, Diri, who is the head of South-South Governors Forum, noted that due to the delegate election process being common between political parties, it was an extremely convoluted exercise.

He declared that the slogan at that time was “if there are no delegates, then nobody can have a governor,” but today it changed to consensus building.

Godswill Akpabio, President of the Senate, commended Giadom, the former national vice chairman, for his unwavering commitment in winning over all the governorship members of this party.

Akpabio conveyed his delight at Diri’s inclusion in the APC, stating that he was fond of the Bayelsa governor due to his gentle demeanor.

Akpabio added that with complete focus, the South-South will be the geo-political zone in Nigeria that will cast the most votes for President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

He added that in the past 46 years, there has been no senate president in our region, noting that Tinubu acknowledged the South-South region.

“The South-South has been given a senate president, and we express our gratitude to him.”

The host governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and his counterparts of Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Edo, and Cross River discussed the topic of unity of purpose and who shared their vision for Tinubu’s re-election.

In their remarks, the governors pledged to work towards the president’s re-election.
