Diri Orders Investigation Into Death of Peresuodei Ondutimi Abbah

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has directed a thorough investigation into the death of Peresuodei Ondutimi Abbah of Amassoma Community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state.

The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Biriyai Dambo, confirmed in a statement on Monday that his office was aware of the unfortunate incident.

The 64-year-old said the governor and his office had taken a keen and special interest in the matter and were working closely with the Bayelsa State Police Command and other relevant security agencies to ensure a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

He assured the public that investigations were at an advanced stage, with critical information obtained and statements from potential witnesses successfully collected, adding that no stone would be left unturned in uncovering the truth.

According to him, Mr Diri also directed that his office should take over the matter at the conclusion of the investigation for onward prosecution.

He urged members of the public to remain calm, avoid speculation and refrain from spreading unverified information that could prejudice the investigation or escalate tensions.

The government extended condolences to the family, friends and community of the deceased and assured them that the state will take all necessary legal steps to ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable through due process and brought to justice.

The Port City (TCPN) gathered that the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, Iyamah Daniel Edebor, had earlier ordered a full-scale investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice was served.

The police said preliminary investigations revealed that on 15 January 2026, Bodmas Prince Kemepade of ICHC Centre, Tenacious Street, Edepie, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, allegedly arrested and brought Abbah, 24, and Peresuodei Destiny, 22, both of Amassoma Community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, from their residence to the Police Station.

The arrest was reportedly carried out in the company of personnel from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) over an alleged threat-to-life post on Facebook.

Upon their arrival at the station, bruises were observed on the suspects’ bodies by the police. Given the seriousness of the allegation, the investigation commenced immediately, and statements were obtained from the suspects.

However, Abbah, now deceased, appeared incoherent while giving his statement and was subsequently taken to the Police Clinic for medical examination and treatment.

At the clinic, the attending medical officer advised that the suspect be released to his relatives for proper medical attention. Consequently, the suspects were handed over to a family member, Charles Edure.

Approximately two weeks after their release, reports surfaced on social media that Abbah, who had earlier been released, died on 29 January 2026.
