Breaking Barriers: Nigeria’s First Female Director-General of the Nigerian Law School

In a historic milestone for legal education in Nigeria, Dr. Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote has been appointed as the first female Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, marking a significant turning point in the nation’s legal history and a major stride for gender inclusion in the legal profession.

The appointment, approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in January 2026, takes effect from January 10, 2026, for a four-year term. With this development, Dr. Odusote becomes the first woman to head the Nigerian Law School since its establishment in 1962. For over six decades, the institution has trained generations of Nigerian lawyers, making her emergence at the helm both symbolic and transformative.

The Nigerian Law School remains the final and mandatory stage of professional training for law graduates before they are called to the Nigerian Bar. Leadership of such a strategic institution places Dr. Odusote at the centre of shaping the future of legal practice in the country. Her appointment reflects a gradual but deliberate shift toward inclusivity and merit-based leadership within Nigeria’s legal and academic institutions.

Dr. Odusote’s journey to the top is rooted in years of dedication to legal education. She obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree from Obafemi Awolowo University and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. She later earned a Master of Laws degree from the same institution and proceeded to the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, where she obtained a doctorate in law. Her academic focus spans company and commercial law, public law, and the administration of justice.

She joined the Nigerian Law School in 2001 as a lecturer and steadily rose through the ranks. Over the years, she has served in several key capacities, including Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics, and Head of Campus. Before her appointment as Director-General, she was the Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus, one of the Law School’s busiest and most influential centres.

Beyond administration, Dr. Odusote is a respected scholar with numerous publications in local and international law journals. She has presented papers at legal education conferences and contributed to discussions on improving professional legal training in Nigeria. Her experience also includes international academic exposure as a visiting scholar in the United Kingdom, as well as service on committees of the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Bar Association.

As Director-General, she now bears responsibility for the academic direction, administration, and strategic coordination of all Nigerian Law School campuses nationwide. She also plays a crucial liaison role between the Law School and key legal bodies such as the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers, and the Nigerian Bar Association.

Dr. Odusote’s appointment goes beyond personal achievement. It stands as a powerful symbol of progress for women in law and academia, challenging long-standing gender barriers in leadership. For many young female lawyers and academics, her rise represents possibility, inspiration, and the gradual reshaping of Nigeria’s professional landscape.

Her tenure is widely expected to strengthen legal education standards while reinforcing the message that leadership in Nigeria’s most prestigious institutions is open to excellence, regardless of gender.
